All our flutes are individually inspected and hand polished to remove all machine marks. This extra step assures the sharpest cutting edge possible. They are shipped sharp.
I use the 3/8" Spindle Detail Gouge on spindle work for detail. When ground with a steep angle it will get into tighter places. This is my go to tool when I turn finials.
I recommed either the 8" or 12" handle for Spindle Detail, I peronialy prefer the 8"

I have been using this tool since Dave introduced me to it, I have half a dozen in my tool rack. Tried a Carter and Sons..nice tools but not stiff enough for me.

As a new turner having to invest in a lathe, grinder, chuck..everything. I opted to go with a cheap set of starter lathe tools. They seemed to work really good. A local wood shop recommended I try a "real" tool with a D-Way so I ordered the 3/8" spindle gouge.
WOW.. it cuts like butter. Now I know what truly sharp feels like! I have already started a D-Way wish list for myself and will be upgrading/replacing all of my tools over time.
Besides the quality of the tools, I had questions about how to setup a varigrind from wolverine to properly sharpen this tool. Jimmie responded with one of the most detailed and easy to understand suggestions on setup along with some photos and tips.
These tools are expensive but when you combine the quality of the product with the high level of customer service.. well you just don't find that much these days.

I've been out of the lathing loop for quite a while. The last time I bought a lathe tool was about 15 years ago. So, when the need for a small spindle gouge recently showed up, I initially wanted to stick with the same brand / steel as the last tool I bought, but thought I'd look up some other makers too. I did a bit of research on good steels and companies and D-way kept popping up, so that's what I went with, and I'm very happy I did.
It needed a handle, so i made a nice 11 incher from a chunk of beech and used the cut offs from the handle to practice some beads and coves before I hopped onto my project. This tool is perfect, still producing nice shearing cuts after a few hours without sharpening! I definitely wasn't getting that mileage from any of my other tools. Not sure what else I could say about it except that my next tool purchase will by a D-Way and probably a skew chisel!!

Another excellent tool from D-way. I use this spindle gouge for finer detail work and it does an excellent job of getting in to tighter places that my 1/2" spindle gouge can't access. An excellent tool for finer detail turning,

Dave's design, the M42 steel and the smooth, polished flutes produce a gouge that that is unsurpassed in clean, long lasting cutting. If I were stuck on a desert island with one turning tool this would be it.

This 3/8" spindle gouge has a slightly deeper flute than others which was a plesant surprise because I can make more cuts in one pass than with other comparable tools which take two or more cuts to get the shape I want. The steel is outstanding and stays sharp longer than any others I've had and the flute is really polished smooth with no mill marks which leaves a clean cut. I'm very pleased and will buy more.

From someone who's been woodturning for 38 years, Dave's tools are the best on the market. If you enjoy wasting your time, search the world for a better tool.
