 Product Description

Our Wood Turning Hollowing Tool is made from 5/8's cold rolled steel and is offered in two configurations; one designed for the lathe running in forward rotation and one for the lathe rotating in reverse. Our Wood Turning Hollowing Tool is made with an outrigger to counteract rotational forces and comes with an adjustable thickness gauge to give a visual representation of wall thickness.  In addition to an ergonomic and user friendly design, the hollowing tool comes with an adjustable M42 HSS scraper. The cutter is easily removable for sharpening and pivots to reach under moderately wide hollow form shoulders. The D-Way Hollowing Tool allows for a more comfortable position at the lathe.

Frequently asked question...Why do some folks like turning in reverse? Answer - It's a matter of personal preference. Some people find reverse more natural. If you own a swan neck tool or any tool that you can reverse the cutter, you could experiment with that. That would give you some feel for it.  Your elbow tends to be closer to the body in reverse. Try standing in from of your lathe and go through the motions you would use to hollow. Whichever way feels better is your answer.  - Jimmie

  1. Great hollowing tool

Posted by Jacob on Jun 23rd 2023

I really like this tool. I have the reverse hollower. The thickness gauge is simple and genius. It saves a lot of time not having to constantly stop and check wall thickness. This thing really hogs out material. It seems to start vibrating pretty hard after 6 or so inches deep, but that may be my inexperience and not the tool. This is the first D-WAY tool I have purchased, and it won't be the last.

  2. BUY IT!!!!!

Posted by Thomas on Jan 21st 2022

I have mulled over buying the hollowing tool for over a year and finally bit the bullet and purchased it. It is well worth it. No more worrying about measuring wall thickness to make sure it’s even. Or having to worry about going through the wall. This tool makes a wonderful cut also and can remove some wood quick. I wish I’d of bought it when I first seen it. So if you are thinking of getting this tool - go ahead and buy it, it is well worth the investment. I can turn a hollow form twice as fast with this tool then with my other hollowing tools.

  3. Works well.

Opted for reverse turn tool. Takes some getting used to. Elbow support and anti-torque arm well designed. Hollowing forms 4-5 inches to start.

  4. Hollowing Fool

Posted by Freddy Beem on Dec 17th 2019

A great tool, a very aggressive, making hollowing quicker and easier . I do a lot of smaller pieces, this tool keeps me from having to set up the lazer system. I might add that D-Way Tools have really customer oriented people to work with. I will be purchasing more tools from D-Way. Thanks for great service.

  5. Simply the best

Posted by Jim on Dec 2nd 2019

I own several different hollowing rigs, but this one is, by far, the easiest to use. The outrigger allows you to get your tool rest up close to the work piece, allowing for another inch or so of depth before chatter starts to become an issue. While I wouldn't recommend trying to hollow anything deeper than about 7 inches, I also have no desire to make hollow forms much larger than that, so it's really not an issue. I have several other D-Way tools and each of them is well designed and built. Really great stuff!

  6. Love it

Posted by Jake on Mar 8th 2019

I really wanted to try hollowing; however, I just don't have the funds or the lathe to justify buying a rig. This allowed me to work on some medium size hollow forms, bigger than an ornament not quite 8 in. I would have to say I love this tool. Definitely order a second cutter right away. Took mine off to sharpen and lost it in the shavings. Took out the spare and keep on turning. I will have to find the original once I clean the shop.

  7. A fun tool to add a new skill to my projects

Posted by Steve Taormina on Nov 21st 2018

After watching Dave's video on hollowing several times I called to ask a few questions about the tool and his hollowing techniques. Dave was busy with another customer at the time but took the time to call me back and answer all my questions about his hollowing tool. I've only been turning for a couple of years now and never having hollowed before I was pleased when the tool performed as easily as his video shows. My first two hollow forms were of uniform thickness. This tool has provided me with a new and fun skill to add to my wood turning projects.

  8. Best hollowing tool out there

Posted by mike on Oct 12th 2018

I love this tool! It is very well built and simple. I have seen all sorts of "contraptions" for hollowing...some involve a specially designed banjo or using the tailstock and having all sorts of extra bars and rods for lasers to mount. I dont feel like being Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible hanging from wires with lasers and such just to hollow a form. This tool is simple with a simple design for wall thickness indication and the outrigger is perfect for dealing with the twisting of the tool. Its badass like everything else of D-Way. I didn't like the foam pad on the arm support, so I glued a piece of leather in its place and the tool is absolutely perfect now. Dave has a great video showing and explaining the tool and how to use it. Shipping was insanely fast and Dave really handles business...I have Thompson and Carter tools, but once I tried D-Way...its the ONLY place I go to for turning tools now. A swan neck hollowing tool will go for up to $150 with no out rigger, no arm brace and a lesser quality cutting tip...for $35 more I have a superior tool. Thanks, Dave...great design, great quality, and great price!

  9. D-Way Hollowing Tool is a God sent

    Posted by J B Johnson on Apr 12th 2018

It's ability to remove wood and leave a smooth surface ready for sanding saves time and labor. I wasn't bothered with catches or gouges. It is really fun to use.

  10. Love the boinger (spring thing to keep thickness under control)

Posted by Marc Paulson on Jan 23rd 2018

I am impressed by the quality and the way this tool makes it seem so easy.
I ordered the reverse tool and it really does help to make things a bit more visible. I also really thought how simple the boinger idea was for keeping the thickness under control and it really works well. I may have to invest in a bit better tool rest, but the tool is awesome no complaints. Best turning investment I have made all year.
