Loading... Please wait...5/8" Bowl Gouge - Fingernail Grind made with M42-HSS. Sold unhandled.
All our flutes are individually inspected and hand polished to remove all machine marks. This extra step assures the sharpest cutting edge possible. The Fingernail Grind bowl gouge is the go-to tool for roughing out - especially bowls, hollow forms, and platters - smaller pieces smaller gouge, larger pieces larger gouge. It is also very useful when you roll it on the side and used as a sheer scraper. Excellent for removing small tool marks and finessing long curves. They are shipped sharp.
- We use the American method of measurement for the stated size - diameter of the tool, not flute size.
- Suggest either 12" or 16" handle sizes. Depends on what size gouge you are working with, your project, and the size of your lathe.
To folks who want to do a 40/40 grind... Our Fingernail grind gouges are very versatile and can be easily modified. The swept back sides are already at 40 degrees. However, we still suggest trying the gouge as it comes and check out if it meets your needs as is. It is a tried and true profile and can be repeated using the appropriate sharpening jigs.
Tool bevel grinds are all about personal preference. We try to be in the middle range of grinds to keep the majority of people happy. Tool grinds are very easy to change and we feel people shouldn't be afraid to experiment with bevel angles. Happy to say that we have also added PARABOLIC and 10-V gouge selections to our lineup - we now have something for everybody. ~ Jimmie

I have used most bowl gouges out there and this is the besbest for me. It cuts better and stays sharp longer than
Even a Glacier v15. Thanks for making wood turning easy.

I’ve been a Woodturner for 47 years. Started when all bbergstbowl gouges carbon steel. I have turning tooled by all the major companies, but my go to gouges are D-Way. This is my third 5/8” bowl gouge. The are supporters in steel technologies and finish with optimal large sweet spot flute.

One of the best parts of this tool is that the tool is separate from the handle so sharpening is really easy because the handle is not hindering the sharpening.

I recently purchased a 5/8 bowl gouge with the fingernail grind. I wish I'd done it a long time ago. I'm amazed at the difference in control with this tool. It arrived very sharp. I've only turned one bowl with it so far, but I'm anxious to see how long the edge holds. Anyone giving thought to a new gouge? You owe it to yourself to try this one. You'll be glad you did.

Excellent shipping and packing. Bowl gouge is ready to cut and at the grind I look for. This is going to be one of several gouges I purchased for a more shallow grind to be used in a workshop. This will allow me to help determine which grind I will prefer in the long term without regrinding the gouge to different grinds.

Had a question about matching the handle to the tool and sent an email. About two hours later the phone rang and it was Dave answering all my questions and encouraging me. What focus on the customer and willingness to share in advancing a hobby he obviously loves. They are probably too good for me but trying to learn to use them with the grind they are delivered with. Dave makes it look much easier on the videos.

THIS is my go-to tool. The balance and heft is great....I love this tool for roughing irregular shaped pieces or pieces with knots because it goes right thru it. The handles are great and have a nice grip and tool steel seems to be a lot better than my other tools that are HSS as the edge does stay sharper for longer. I have another brand 5/8 gouge with an ash handle and using it now feels like it is so light and cheap. D-way is now the only tools Ill buy for turning.

I have tried a few different gouges but this one is miles apart from the other one!!! Cuts are close and crisp, hold an edge waaaay longer so I spend less time sharpening and more time turning!! Had a question about the gouge and contacted Dave about these and he was very friendly and thorough in our conversation!!! I will definitely be picking up more D-Way products in the near future!!!

I started with some cheap tools and you get what you pay for. At first it was confusing about buying handles and tools separate. I bought this and the long handle and go to town on chainsaw rough cuts on the lathe. It gives me confidence to have a stout handle and good quality tool to spin a wobbly square piece of wood I used a chainsaw on. If your a Harbor Freight kinda guy these tools are not for you. If you want a quality sharp tool then I recommend. I don't use my cheap set I bought for $80 Johnathan's Best and it may be good for small stuff. I want to feel comfortable spinning a piece of rough saw wood at 500-700 RPM and sticking the tool over the rest . The chips start flying with this tool.
