5/8" Bowl Gouge - Fingernail Grind made with M42-HSS. Sold unhandled.
All our flutes are individually inspected and hand polished to remove all machine marks. This extra step assures the sharpest cutting edge possible. The Fingernail Grind bowl gouge is the go-to tool for roughing out - especially bowls, hollow forms, and platters - smaller pieces smaller gouge, larger pieces larger gouge. It is also very useful when you roll it on the side and used as a sheer scraper. Excellent for removing small tool marks and finessing long curves. They are shipped sharp.
- We use the American method of measurement for the stated size - diameter of the tool, not flute size.
- Suggest either 12" or 16" handle sizes. Depends on what size gouge you are working with, your project, and the size of your lathe.
To folks who want to do a 40/40 grind... Our Fingernail grind gouges are very versatile and can be easily modified. The swept back sides are already at 40 degrees. However, we still suggest trying the gouge as it comes and check out if it meets your needs as is. It is a tried and true profile and can be repeated using the appropriate sharpening jigs.
Tool bevel grinds are all about personal preference. We try to be in the middle range of grinds to keep the majority of people happy. Tool grinds are very easy to change and we feel people shouldn't be afraid to experiment with bevel angles. Happy to say that we have also added PARABOLIC and 10-V gouge selections to our lineup - we now have something for everybody. ~ Jimmie

I use the 5/8 on my midsized lathe to rough twice turned bowls. It is a beast. It also pulls very clean cuts, I am extremely pleased with this chisel

This tool is a very good quailty tool. Holds a edge better than regular HSS steel. Long tool for extra sharping. Recommend getting it. The only regret you will have is I wish I have got one sooner.

This is a wonderful bowl gouge

I have been using the 1/2 inch D-Way bowl gouge and needed something larger. This one can really remove wood quickly. The larger diameter provides good control when making heavy cuts but can also make those fine, finishing cuts too. The steel stands up to hard wood like maple well. I'm pleased with its performance.

The 5/8” bowl gouge is a work horse. As with all D-Way tools , the sharpen easy and stay sharp longer.
Customer service is second to none. Great people to deal with and your tools are shipped fast with no hassle.
D-Way tools are my go to .

D-way is awesome to talk to if you have any questions; economical when you think about how long the tool will last; and you can replace the tool and reuse the handle. Hands down the best gouge in my (probably over large!) collection. I use a 5/8 gouge multiple hours a week, and I’m can’t recommend it enough!
