All our flutes are individually inspected and hand polished to remove all machine marks. This extra step assures the sharpest cutting edge possible. The Fingernail Grind bowl gouge is the go-to tool for roughing out - especially bowls, hollow forms, and platters - smaller pieces smaller gouge, larger pieces larger gouge. It is also very useful when you roll it on the side and used as a sheer scraper. Excellent for removing small tool marks and finessing long curves. They are shipped sharp.
- We use the American method of measurement for the stated size - diameter of the tool, not flute size.
- Suggest either 12" or 16" handle sizes. Depends on what size gouge you are working with, your project, and the size of your lathe.
To folks who want to do a 40/40 grind... Our Fingernail grind gouges are very versatile and can be easily modified. The swept back sides are already at 40 degrees. However, we still suggest trying the gouge as it comes and check out if it meets your needs as is. It is a tried and true profile and can be repeated using the appropriate sharpening jigs.
Tool bevel grinds are all about personal preference. We try to be in the middle range of grinds to keep the majority of people happy. Tool grinds are very easy to change and we feel people shouldn't be afraid to experiment with bevel angles. Happy to say that we have also added PARABOLIC and 10-V gouge selections to our lineup - we now have something for everybody. ~ Jimmie

I have bought several D-Way gouges, and they are my favorites by far. They have great steel, great groove profiles, and come per-sharpened to
my liking. The best part is that I can buy gouges without handles, so I can use collet handles..

This has been my go to bowl gouge since I bought my first one. These are the best tools I've ever owned; and I've used most leading brands, foreign and domestic.

After spending a long weekend at Arrowmont in Gatlinburg, TN last year and hearing about the exceptional quality of the D-Way tools, i've been lusting after them. This Bowl gouge is my 5th D-Way tool and every one lives up to my expectation. This bowl gouge coupled with the D-Way handle, the quick change knob and the bushing allows me to not only store the bowl gouge with the tip in the handle, but use the 1/2" bowl gouge with the same handle.
Sharpening the gouges is so much easier than having them handled.
I can surely recommend these D-Way tools.

I tried the 5/8" gouge with the 16" handle. I am very pleased with the feel and the finish on the pieces. The gouge was perfectly sharpened which surprised me. This gouge cuts very well, better then HSS of my older gouges. I also have a Thompson V10, 3/4" gouge to compare wtih. The M42 seems to have a sharper edge when ground with a CBN 350 grit wheel.

The 5/8 bowl gouge is terrific. it's right up there with the negative rake scraper. (If you haven't seen the video about the upside down sharpening method, you are missing out!!).
I've a large inventory of Carter & Sons tools... D-Ways are just as good... and the scraper sharpening is a real +...
Do yourselves a favor and take a look at D-Way.

My most recent purchase was the 5/8 inch fingernail grind bowl gouge, including 12 inch handle and quick release knob. Over the last several years, I've also purchased additional tools to add to and replace old tools including 1/2 inch and 3/8 inch bowl gouges, negative rake scraper, diamond point, 3/8 inch spindle gouge, additional 12 inch handle, 10 inch handle, adapters and quick release knobs. These tools are well made, handles have nice weight and good grip and feel. Once you have the handles the individual tools can be replaced when neccessary. They are a great investment and good value. I highly recommend these quality tools.

I ordered this tool after taking a workshop with Stuart Batty in Rochester. It ground to a 40/40 edge and cuts beautifully. I have put a permanent 20 " handle on the gouge.
