I have been using CBN grinding wheels for sharpening my turning tools for a year and have found them to be a real asset. The wheels are factory balanced, which makes my grinders run very smooth. The grinding wheels have 11/2" face to use, they don't need any dressing therefore I don't have the mess of truing wheels and I don't breathe the dust related to dressing wheels. There is no bluing of the steel, as these grinding wheels put very little heat into the tool. In a normal sharpening, you can still touch the end of the tool. If you noticed in the pictures of the grinders, I have removed the guards. You can remove the guards with these wheels because there is no chance of them blowing up. With the guards off, you have better light and no shadows from the guards when sharpening your tools. You still should use eye protection. I use 180 grit for my beading tools, skews and spindle gouges. I use 80 grit for shaping and sharpening any of my larger turning tools. They do produce a great edge. The CBN wheels are specifically designed to grind HSS.

Don't know why I waited so long to add this to my turning tools. Amazing how much easier turning has become for me.

I am a new turner and have been using the gray wheels that came with my grinder. I thought I was putting an edge on my tools until I bought a pair of CBN wheels. What a difference! Turning is so much easier and enjoyable with sharp tools. I second all the comments previously made about these wheels: well made; perfectly balanced; cool running.
A word about D-Way Tools customer service: Two hours after I posted my order I noticed an e-mail in my In box. It was a message from D-Way thanking me for my order and letting me it was already shipped. No kidding. Two hours. I had my wheels three days later. You can't get better service than that.

After much deliberation and procrastination I finally decided to purchase a set of D-way CBN wheels in 80 and 180 grit. Upon receipt I carefully read the directions and installed the wheels on my grinder.
When I switched it on the wheels ran true without any vibration or side to side shimmy. Perfect from the start!
I decided to sharpen a few tools and was delighted at the edge I was able to achieve. My skew needed no honing straight off the 180 grit wheel and was razor sharp. The 1 1/2" width made it much easier to achieve the desired shape on the edge.
The results were excellent for the rest of my tools. I can only say how disappointed I am in that my own procrastination delayed my enjoyment of these fine products.

the only con I can find is the sparks do not flow over the edge of the tool in the same quantity as a stone wheel, this took me a whole minute to get used to, excellent product.

I purchased this D-Way eight inch 180 grit flat wheel to use with my Tormek T4. The Tormek is a great sharpening machine, however, reshaping is slow. Combining D-Way and Tormek offers much faster heavy grinding combined with the control of the Tormek's 100 RPM. It allows me to use the full range of Tormek jigs without needing a second grinder.
Communication with Dave is excellent. No complaints with the fine service and informative videos. Machining is first-rate. The inch and a half width fits the T4 well. I much prefer it to using an adapted dry grinder with a narrower wheel.
A quality product from an honest dealer; I would buy again.

Love it! I've been wanting a CBN grinding wheel for a long time, and treated myself to one for the holidays. Makes sharpening seem easier and fun, plus it's more pleasant on your ears than the stone wheels. I don't yet sharpen like the pros, but I'm getting better.

I'm relatively new to turning and have been trying a lot of different grinding wheels and alternative ways to get a comfortable edge on gouges (e.g., 35 degree vs 40 degree bevels). My lathe club has a D-Way CBN wheel and it gets a lot of use. Everyone goes to it even though we have 3 other grinding wheels available. It does a great job and saves me from grinding my gouges to nubs or ruining the temper of the steel. I decided to buy wheels for my home shop rather that continue to use the oxide wheels that came with the grinder. Money well spent because I now enjoy tool sharpening and my bowl turning have improved...my technique is still lousy, but the cuts are cleaner.

In my opinion, it is not worth attempting to compare or rate the CBN grinding wheels against aluminum oxide wheels. The only thing going for the aluminum oxide wheels is their cost as compared to CBN wheels. Everything else is so much better, that even the cost (assuming you have the funds available) is a no brainer!
I am extremely pleased with the ease of use and performance of my new CBN grinding wheel.

I have seen and used these CBN wheels before and knew that one day I would purchase one for sharpening my turning tools. After doing some research I found that Dave at D-Way Tools offered the best price, plus he was local.
I placed my order one evening and it was shipped out by noon the next day and on my porch in two days.
Using this wheel gives me an excellent, clean and sharp edge every time without the dust or heat buildup that you get from regular wheels..
This was truly a great investment that will last for a long time.
