All our flutes are individually inspected and hand polished to remove all machine marks. This extra step assures the sharpest cutting edge possible. The Fingernail Grind bowl gouge is the go-to tool for roughing out - especially bowls, hollow forms, and platters - smaller pieces smaller gouge, larger pieces larger gouge. It is also very useful when you roll it on the side and used as a sheer scraper. Excellent for removing small tool marks and finessing long curves. They are shipped sharp.
- We use the American method of measurement for the stated size - diameter of the tool, not flute size.
- Suggest either 12" or 16" handle sizes. Depends on what size gouge you are working with, your project, and the size of your lathe.
To folks who want to do a 40/40 grind... Our Fingernail grind gouges are very versatile and can be easily modified. The swept back sides are already at 40 degrees. However, we still suggest trying the gouge as it comes and check out if it meets your needs as is. It is a tried and true profile and can be repeated using the appropriate sharpening jigs.
Tool bevel grinds are all about personal preference. We try to be in the middle range of grinds to keep the majority of people happy. Tool grinds are very easy to change and we feel people shouldn't be afraid to experiment with bevel angles. Happy to say that we have also added PARABOLIC and 10-V gouge selections to our lineup - we now have something for everybody. ~ Jimmie

If you have ever even thought about a 5/8 bowl gouge before, it's time to stop thinking and start buying. This has been my "go to" gouge. You will like this one for sure.

There is nothing quite like staring down a blank of tough Texas Mesquite wood, armed with Dave's 5/8 finger nail grind bowl gouge, the bark falls off the wood, and the gouge makes a task like this pure joy! You know you have a tool in your hand, and sharpening is just dressing the bevel.

Far and away the best gouges I've used.
They take and keep a very good edge.

This is the 2nd tool I've bought from Dave.
The first was the 3/4 skew what a great tool.
The 5/8 Bowl came in 2 days.
I got it without the handle, like to make my own.
It was sharp as a razor.
Cuts like cutting butter.
A real quality tool.
I don't know much about different steels but this tool and the others
hold an edge for a long time.
When it's time to sharpen you can check out the video.
I'll be buying other tools from Dave.
Glad Captain Eddie turned me on to these tools.

I've use many gouges and this one is the best at holding an edge, ejecting chips from the flute, and shows little deflection under load 5-6" beyond the tool rest. If you are looking to improve you turning this is one tool that can help you become better. If you have a question just call Dave - he normally answers the phone. I've got seven of these on the bench ready to go. I also have others getting dusty because they are simply do not get as sharp as this gouge. Done. Buy one. Turn. Be happy.

When I first started turning my instructor said the only gouge to purchase was a D-Way fingernail bowl gouge. I have since bought another 5/8" fingernail gouge and some other gouges. This gouge works well and stays sharp. Dave's videos also help with sharpening.

This gouge is my first D-Way tool. I have turning tools from several different manufacturers and after having used it, I must say that it certainly stands out in the crowd. I will be slowly replacing all my turning tools. Good Job Dave.
