1/2" Bowl Gouge - Fingernail Grind made with M42-HSS. Sold unhandled.
All our flutes are individually inspected and hand polished to remove all machine marks. This extra step assures the sharpest cutting edge possible. The Fingernail Grind bowl gouge is the go-to tool for roughing out - especially bowls, hollow forms, and platters - smaller pieces smaller gouge, larger pieces larger gouge. It is also very useful when you roll it on the side and used as a sheer scraper. Excellent for removing small tool marks and finessing long curves. They are shipped sharp.
- We use the American method of measurement for the stated size - diameter of the tool, not flute size.
- Suggest either 12" or 16" handle sizes. Depends on what size gouge you are working with, your project, and the size of your lathe.
To folks who want to do a 40/40 grind... Our Fingernail grind gouges are very versatile and can be easily modified. The swept back sides are already at 40 degrees. However, we still suggest trying the gouge as it comes and check out if it meets your needs as is. It is a tried and true profile and can be repeated using the appropriate sharpening jigs.
Tool bevel grinds are all about personal preference. We try to be in the middle range of grinds to keep the majority of people happy. Tool grinds are very easy to change and we feel people shouldn't be afraid to experiment with bevel angles. Happy to say that we have also added PARABOLIC and 10-V gouge selections to our lineup - we now have something for everybody. ~ Jimmie

It didnt take long to realize i had made less trips to the grinder, the steel holds an edge longer. I ordered the 16" handle and realy like the weight and balance. Without a doubt the best qualit tool i have in the shop.

I have used several manufacturers 1/2 bowl gouges including Thompson, Oneway,Sorby and others and the d-way gouge is my favorite. It is ground with the best profile and the m42 holds an edge very well.

I just love Dave's gouges. I recently started using one of these ground to 35° for finish cuts. Combined with a steep shear cut, the finish is amazing, even on the soft woods I turn here in Alaska.
Half of the secret is great steel, and the other half is the very smooth polishing on the flute that allows such a clean cutting edge.
I now say that over the life of this tool I will more than likely save the purchase price of this tool in sandpaper—not to mention a heck of a lot of sanding.
I love them.

Purchased this tool based on prior purchase of D-way beading tools and I'm glad I did. They hold an edge like no other bowl gouge I have, and I have 6 others 3 of which are sized 1/2". Cut smoothly with each pass and handle easily. Like it to the point that it has become one of my 1st . line tools. Plan on getting others.

I use this gouge for all my bowl turning. Keeps an edge longer than any other gouge I have ever used. The quality of the tool is exceptional.

I use this gouge for 90% of my turning. Great for aggressive cuts for rough work, but also delicate finish cuts. The quality of the tool really shows.
