All 1/2" Bowl Gouge - Bottom Feeder flutes are individually inspected and hand polished to remove all machine marks. This extra step ensures the sharpest cutting edge possible. They are shipped sharp.
The Bottom Feeder grind is used on the inside of bowls especially for finish cuts, you can also use it on the outside of bowls from the foot to the top for all of your finishing cuts, if you learn to use this grind for finish cuts your sanding will be greatly reduced. You can always sand a piece into submission, but it is not much fun.

I was finally able to get around the bottom of a bowl without having to change over to a scraper until I was ready to do the final clean up. Using this tool speed up the process from start to finish and made for a much better turning experience. I was also surprised at how sharp the tool was when I unwrapped it and that I was able to start turning immediately.

This is my second purchase as I either mis-placed the first one or re-shaped the it. It does an excellent job of cleaning up the bottom and helps minimize sanding , thus saves time too.

I have been turning for about 3 years. I have made and bought a variety of tools.I like the idea of the M-42 steel tools. I have been interested in the D-way tools for a while. So when I decided that I need a new bowl gouge I came to D-Way.
This "bottom feeder" does exactly what the name implies. It is great at cleanly cutting the bottom of my bowls, even in end grain.
It came sharp, which I really appreciate. I have used it on 3 turnings so far and have not seen the need to sharpen it yet so I cannot say what it is like to sharpen but I expect no surprises.
Great tool and I will try a couple more tools shorlty.

I TURN BOWLS ON MY JET 1642 LATHE. THE 1/2 GOUGE I GOT FROM D-WAY TOOLS IS EASY TO SHARPEN AND CLEANS UP THE BOTTOM OF BOTH GREEN AND DRY BOWLS EXTREMELY WELL.
THANKS DAVE

This bottom feeder tool was used to level the bottom of a Black Walnut bowl and performed exceptionally well. Extremely pleased with the performance and will recommend it to fellow wood turners.

I love using my 1/2-inch fingernail bowl gouge to finish a deep bowl, but have found the bottom feeder makes it easier to round out the bottom without risking blowing out the bottom. Keeps an edge for a long time, so I'm sold on D-Way tools.

What really stands out right away is the incredibly smooth milling. If you look closely at other small gouge makers, you'll often still see milling marks in the flute. Remembering that an edge is only as sharp as the intersection of two planes--it's important to have this extra care in a gouge meant for finishing cuts.
Dave's steel seems to sharpen especially well and holds up as good as anything else I've tried...and I only at least 20 gouges from most prominent makers out there.
I'll be switching all to Dave's, there's nothing finer.

Over time I have collected each tool offered. This you should know.
The Bad: I did have to go over each tool with the Tormek 4000 grit stone and used jigs to get a perfect edge. Now I regret spending so much on lesser products - including the finest carbide.
The good: When you slowly sharpen the finest steel, you feel the butter smooth grain in the thing. Dave's are consistently excellent.
Cutting very hard wood, you get very nice cuts and it is hard to dull the tool, very hard. Carbide offers nothing better than these.
Being able to take the cutter out of the handle for service or storage is very useful. The handles are very good and having the same profile for each tool leads to more consistency for detail work and a much shorter learning curve for those you introduce to the craft.
The range of tools offered truly cover any need or want. A 1/8 inch spindle to a large hollow form or platter.
In Summary, my son is about to get a ton of hand-me-downs and I now have the best set of tooling that is a total joy to use and keep sharp.
There is none better.

The bottom feeder is great! I purchased the 1/2 and it arrived super sharp. Within 30 minutes of hitting the mailbox, yep I was waiting, I used it to slice some nice shavings from a bowl. Great product and super in ice folks.
I will be buying more!
