The CBN wheels are specifically designed to grind HSS. We are now offering fine and extra fine CBN wheels 360 and 600 Grit. 80 grit for shaping and sharpening our larger turning tools no longer in stock - 60 grit still available.
We have been using CBN grinding wheels for sharpening our turning tools and have found them to be a real asset. The wheels are factory balanced, which makes your grinders run very smooth. The grinding wheels have 1 1/2" face to use, they don't need any dressing therefore you won't have the mess of truing wheels and breathing the dust related to dressing wheels. There is no bluing of the steel, as these grinding wheels put very little heat into the tool. In a normal sharpening, you can still touch the end of the tool. If you noticed in the pictures of the grinders, we have removed the guards. You can remove the guards with these wheels because there is no chance of them blowing up. With the guards off, you have better light and no shadows from the guards when sharpening your tools. You still should use eye protection. The most popular sellers are 180 grit for our beading tools, skews and spindle gouges. They do produce a great edge.

This is my second CBN wheel from D Way. The first was purchased about 3 years ago and is still flawless. This second wheel was purchased as a gift. Over the past few years a number of other retailers have brought CBN wheels to the market and I have checked them out. None of them are remotely close to quality. One friend purchased a wheel from a very popular retailer and went back to his fryable white wheel! Buy cheap, cry twice.

I am so impressed with the quality of this grinding wheel. It is so well balanced that at times I wonder if the grinder will ever stop when turned off.

I recently bought an 80 grit CBN wheel in the hopes it could mostly replace my 80 grit belts, it has!
Very pleased with the end product. I do free hand sharpening of knives mostly and this wheel on a 3600 rpm grinder is very aggressive and you must have a light touch, I'd recommend a slow or variable speed set up.
I still need the belt but this wheel has taken up 80-90% of the work! It also holds the heat down compared to the aluminum oxide belts.
Big thumbs up from premier sharpening.com

After chatting with the Owner of D - WAY tools when he called me too answer questions I had about turning and what I needed. I explained I was new to turning, but not woodworking. He recommended which tools to buy and not to buy as of now to get started. The subject came up about sharpening, I commented I had a slow speed wet grinder. He replied you'll get rid of that, there messy and take to long CBN is the way to go. After 2 weeks I'm like this wet grinder is not working out for turning tools. It's fine for my planes and hand chesils. Taking way to long and gouging the wheel.
After getting my 1 hp Rikon slow speed grinder and wolverine one jig like Dave recommend I put a 180 wheen on. After initial set-up took me 6 seconds to sharpen 1 inch spindle gouge. 5 seconds on 1/2 spindle gouge. CBN'S ARE AMAZING. My tools are razor sharp instanly... My machinist buddies all are impressed as well which tells me something.
Initial set up for grinder, wolverine jug and wheel is about 700 but turners warned me the lathe isn't expensive it's the tools, chucks and sharpening that adds up. Don't use anything else this n is the ticket.

Initially, I was worried to buy 1 1/2" wide wheels as my Delta GR450 grinder manual says the grinding wheel should be 1". I was ready to buy another grinder if it does not fit and ordered 180 grit with 1 1/2" wide wheel. It fits perfectly. In fact, to install CBN wheel, I should remove a inner washer, which is almost 1/2", that makes it fit nicely.
On the other hands, I have several email communication with them prior to order and they have been kind and replied promptly.

After seeing and hearing David Ellsworth at a demo at Central Arkansas Woodturners, I ordered a CBN wheel. Very satisfied with the speed and ease that an edge is shaped. OBTW the grinder runs much smoother.
