These CBN wheels are specifically designed to grind HSS.
These wheels are factory balanced, which makes grinders run very smooth. The grinding wheels have 1 1/2" face to use, they don't need any dressing therefore you won't have the mess of truing wheels or breathing the dust related to dressing wheels. There is no bluing of the steel, as these grinding wheels put very little heat into the tool. In a normal sharpening, you can still touch the end of the tool. You may have noticed in the pictures of the grinders, the guards have been removed. You can remove the guards with these wheels because there is no chance of them blowing up. With the guards off, you have better light and no shadows from the guards when sharpening your tools. You still should use eye protection. Suggest using 180 grit for our beading tools, skews and spindle gouges. We also use 80 grit for shaping and sharpening our turning tools. They do produce a great edge.

Has uses other than sharpening wood turning tools

I don't have a lathe but I do some light metal fabrication with a Tig welder.
Although it may not be what it was originally designed for, the CBN wheel does a great job of grinding the tungsten electrodes to a very fine point.
Quality Tungsten grinding tools can cost over 200 dollars. Basically they are glorified Dremel tools with a special diamond grinding attachment and that's all they do. The CBN wheels do a better job and faster. Plus you have the option of sharpening other HSS steels like drills bits. The risk of contaminating the tungsten is low since the CBN wheels don't load up like stone wheels do.
